mish mash sweater

40s-inspired standaway collar, color blocking in colors I wouldn't normally put together, grandpa style elbow patches, this sweater has it all!  I was hoping to refashion two extra large men's cashmere sweaters in my husband's Salvation Army pile into two different sweaters for me but turns out I needed both to make one.  I used StephC's free Blank Canvas Tee pattern again and the 9 Lines Sweater hack.  First I made two more plain t-shirts to work out some issues.
Although the 9 lines embellishment attracted me to this hack in the first place, I skipped it because I didn't think the pin tucks would look right on the heavily ribbed blue sweater fabric.  The button band appealed to me too, and I had brown leather buttons picked out to match the elbow patches.  But after the long sleeves, the collar, and the gussets, that was enough drafting for me.  Yes I could have sewn on the buttons anyways, but non-functional buttons along the shoulder seam like that would just bug me.  I tried Steam a Seam Lite for the hem, a method touted by various bloggers of which I am now one.  That stuff works great!
Gusset!
I like this mish mash more than I expected.  It's soft and comfy--cashmere after all--, fits me well, and cost nothing.  I bought the notions at some point but you know what I mean.  We were sledding all afternoon in the foot of snow that dropped overnight, so the photos are extremely low effort out of exhaustion.  Happy winter exhaustion.  Check out the throngs of sledders in Prospect Park:
And now I don't want to see a t-shirt neckband for the next week.

  1. That collar is fantastic Lee. And love this jumper (sorry, I'm British, sweater still sounds too funny to me). Glad you've been able to have some fun with the snow, hope it doesn't hamper you too much. Stay warm!
