sew grateful giveaway

Let me get right to it.  I'm grateful to the all the generous, inspiring sewing bloggers out there who've helped me find my way from lurking and daydreaming about sewing to actually sewing and blogging myself.  As a big fan of Victory Patterns-- I've made Lola, Ava, and two Roxannes-- I want to share the love and support a young, small company with some great ideas.  I also want some vintage patterns I own to go to people who are more likely to make them up.

I'm giving away ONE Victory Patterns pattern
AND the following mid-fifties to early-sixties era vintage patterns:
left: McCall's 5517 (1960), 31" bust
right: Simplicity 3431 (early 60s), 36" bust

left: Simplicity 1044 (1955), 33" bust
right: McCall's 3752 (1956), 32" bust

To enter, please let me know in comments which vintage pattern you prefer as well as something you made for dinner in the past week in as much detail as you care to provide.  I like detail.  One randomly selected person will win the Victory and vintage patterns of her choice.  Then I'll randomly select winners of the other three vintage patterns from their individual pools, if that makes sense.  I'll ship anywhere.  I'll choose winners Monday, February 11 at about 10 in the morning, New York time.

Thank you!

  1. I would love to try the simplicity 3431 and it is close to my size. I love the sleeves and the collar on that one :-) I would love to try a Victory Pattern too :-) I have been having gluten issues so for dinner this week and lunch on several days I made a chicken soup loaded with veggies and thick with chicken and barley and rice and added my favorite spices of fresh chopped garlic, garam masala, fenugreek and Maharajah from Penzy's spices. I am trying to branch out as I kiss my gluten rich diet that I have grown up on goodbye :-) I need a good curry recipe to make with beef roast... any ideas?

  2. Love simplicity 3431, great sleeves! I had a fantastic meal last night, though only helped with chopping -- I was at a friend's for dinner. homemade poutine (vegetarian gravy, cheese curds, peans, mushrooms, onions, homemade fries), spiced beer, and then miso soup with spinach vermicelli, mushrooms, carrots, and more. and then belgian chocolate for dessert! it was superb.

  3. My favourite would be 3752 - I love the long sleeve version. Dinners here are pretty unadventurous- only as exotic as shepherd's pie!(gotta please some fussy kids!)

  4. Love Simplicity 3431, the bow is darling! It's so hard to choose, though, they're all so great! Let's see...in true New York style, I'm not sure I've cooked dinner all week (sick!), but I have ordered lots of take out! Last week, I made some awesome butternut squash soup, though! yum!

  5. I love the Simplicity 1044! Thank you for the offer! I made a ground beef (could use lamb, instead) casserole with sliced potatoes, mushrooms, green peppers, onions, and tomato sauce. Seasoned with ground pepper, salt, fresh oregano, and garlic. Covered and baked until the potatoes were soft.

  6. I like the look of McCalls 3752 please! An I'd love to try Victory Patterns too.
I have to say that my husband basically does all the cooking on our house so when left to our own devices I go for an easy option like a microwave meal (sshh!). But tomorrow I am making us both dinner which will be Courgette and Lancashire Cheese Crumble, which I hope is as tasty as I remember it being when I made it a few years ago!

  7. Fantastic giveaway. I love the faux (?) wrap back of mcall's 5517.
This week I had to feed 17 people for my boyfriend's bday party. I made a huge pot of vegetarian chilli using quorn mince, mushrooms, peppers, onions, courgette, tomatoes and kidney beans, with looaads of spices. Served with jacket potatoes and garlic bread (I don't have a rice cooker sadly).
Then out came chocolate cake with strawberry frosting decorated with a fondant icing Jaws attack scene (currently detailed on my blog). The birthday boy is a shark fan :-)

  8. I love McCalls 3752! That skirt on it is just amazing! I also love Victory patterns and the rise of indie companies. I'm a new follower thanks to Sew Grateful week and I'm off to have a look around your blog. As for the dinner part, I've been making loads of sweet potato fries lately (maybe a little obsessed) and I paired them with a goats cheese meet pizza which was soo amazing!

  9. They are all rather delightful, but McCalls 3752 would be my ideal... As for dinner last week, down here in the southern hempisphere we are in the midst of summer, so it is salad weather all the way. I made a peach and prawn salad, and coincidentally, I also posted a recipe of it, must have been destiny! http://blog.utbwb.com/2013/01/recipe-peach-and-prawn-salad.html

  10. I love the Mcalls 3752 but would be happy with any of them!
Last night I made cashew chicken and brown rice from the Williams and Sonoma Food Made Fast - Asian. Fast, easy, and tasty.
    Thanks! -e

We had a roast vegetable and feta salad for dinner the other day - so tasty! Yum. :-)

  14. McCall's 5517 is my pick. I like the V-neck back.

Ever had a nicoise salad? My version had tuna steak, seared rare, over mixed greens, steamed green beans, sauteed mushrooms, capers, olives, hard boiled eggs. I was trying to eat healthy.

  16. I'm loving the McCall's 3752 pattern. The pencil skirt version looks like the perfect "I'm working right now, but I could throw on a lovely cardigan or jacket and go out for dinner" dress.

Yesterday, I made a wonderful almost-vegan (we're not vegan for any moral reasons, so sometimes eat cheese and this was one of those cheating days) lasagne. I improvised the recipe last week, and although I don't usually make something again so soon it was just too good not to. I made a tomato sauce from fresh tomatoes, lots of parsley, basil, thyme and sage from my window sill, locally grown pink onions, garlic, salt, pepper and a tiny splash of apple cider vinegar (it makes it a bit tangy, which I love). I also made a Bechamel sauce from soy milk, corn starch, salt, and pepper, into which I stirred a very generous portion of chopped fresh spinach from the greenhouse and some grated Emmentaler. Layer between pasta sheets and toss it in the oven for 10-15 minutes. Yum! I'm hungry again just thinking about it.

  17. Love Simplicity 1044- thank you for such a wonderful giveaway. Last week I made Delia's Spinach, ricotta and pine nut lasagne- mmmm! Highly recommended, the recipe is here:

  19. I'd love 3431, though they are all great patterns!
As for dinner last week, I am a big fan of pinterest and all of my dinners are from recipes on there.
One we liked from last week was the Lentil and Mushroom shepard's pie (we are trying to add some vegetarian choices to home, and it has been a struggle, but this one is a keeper. It is better reheated the second day). Here is the link http://aseriesofvintagesewingattempts.blogspot.com/2013/02/sew-grateful-giveaway.html

  20. A lovely giveaway, I really like Simplicity 3431, but I wouldn't mind getting my hands on McCall's 3752 :)
As for dinner... hum, last week I haven't been much at home for dinner, but on Saturday I chose something very simple: a whole chicken made to pieces, then just 4-5 spoonfull olive oil, in the oven, added some white wine, and after the wine was gone, potatoes cut in round slices, added salt, black pepper, and left there for 30' circa. When served, I preferred fresh garlic made to small pieces added on my plate :)

  21. Fantastic giveaway! I like either McCall's 5517 or McCall's 3752 because they have the two different skirt options. Umm, dinner. I made beef stew a couple days ago. I like the beef marinate in some red win before adding carrots, potatoes, onions, etc. Lots of fresh herbs too!

  22. I'd love McCalls 3752. I love the dress and it would be great practice in grading way up!! And I've been eager to try the Victory Roxanne pattern. It's perfection. Recently my husband has been doing the cooking. Last night was pasta with a kind of ratatouille-ish sauce. He's very creative. What I made for dinner was a dress for my daughter.

  24. Oooh! I'd love a Victory pattern, specifically Nicola. I love her patterns! Thanks for sharing. And I made pizza... I make my own whole wheat dough in a bread maker with white whole wheat flour. I have to make 3 personal pizzas, one for me with all veggies and a veggie burger broken up... one for my toddler who thinks black olives are the best thing on this green earth.... then one pizza for my hubby, traditional cheese pizza with veggies. This is making me hungry.

  25. Oooh - count me in for the Simplicity 1044! That neckline is too cute! And a Victory pattern would be pretty awesome too :)

As my hubs and I are incredibly lazy, last night we went to a local diner and enjoyed breakfast for dinner with all the hip elderly folk that also frequent this place :) He got the Mediterranean Skillet and I had pancakes! We shared (how cute!)

    Thanks for the giveaway!

  26. Please count me in! I'd love to win the Ava by Victory or Simplicity 1044 (1955) because it's closest to my bust size and i'm not a pro at grading yet =)

my husband is a super cook (and i just bought him 2 new cookbooks and a fancy le creuset for christmas, so he's putting them to use). i usually just help by measuring things or stirring things, but let him do the rest. we made some amazing shrimp pad thai the other night. it tastes like you'd get at a restaurant. some of the ingredients are not what we'd usually have in our pantry, like fish sauce ("don't buy it if it's cloudy, the good stuff should be transparent" - according to my husband). but everything together tastes amazing! well i love the taste of cilantro and lime and peanut and shrimp. if you don't like those, you probably wouldn't be a fan. now i'm just rambling… thanks for the giveaway!

  27. I like the McCall's 5517 although having to grade it to fit scares me a little!

I made pho the other day. I've been making it a lot lately because it's easy and delish, although never as good as my mum makes it! Simmer chicken thighs on the bone for at least an hour then take out the chicken and let it cool, once cooled, pull all the meat off and coat in fish sauce (nuoc mam). Pour the chicken stock through a sieve to get rid of the icky bits then keep it warm on the stove, season but not too much as you'll get the saltiness from the nuoc mam! Bring some fresh water to the boil, add rice noodles and cook until softened. Chop some spring onions and chuck them in a bowl. Put noodles in bowl, add stock, top off with chicken, eat! Add hot chili sauce if desired.

I love reading all the foodie comments! Definitely making me hungry!

I cooked porridge last night. I fried some anchovies with salt and boiled a salty egg as the side dishes :D

  29. Hard choice to pick a pattern,I would most likely make simplicity 1044.As for dinner this week, well last night I was gonna make spicy potato chip crusted pork chop with oven roasted potatos and salad ,but we were'nt feeling well,I did make a pizza the other day with BBQ chicken, carmelied onions and sharp chedder, that turned out really good.

  30. I love Simplicity 3431 and would make the version without the sleeves. For dinner the other day I cooked a salmon fillet in a garlic butter sauce and served it with homemade mashed potatoes and a salad. It was so good! lol Thanks for the giveaway!

  31. I love the McCalls 3752. And Victory Patterns are high on my list to try, but I'm an impoverished grad student at the moment so holding off the pattern buying until later this year…

    Great giveaway xox

  32. I'd love to try another Victory Pattern.

Here's my Simple Dinner for a Cold Winter Night: In a large pot, fry about a handful of chopped salty meat (bacon, ham, sausage) with the same amount of onion + a bit of garlic + a bit of savoury or other herb if you like. When browned, add one full bag of frozen green peas (1kg). Add stock or water until the peas are covered. Cook until done (only about 15 minutes in a pinch). Blend with an immersion blender or in the food processor. Add stock/water if it's too thick. That's it.

  33. I'd grab the Simplicity 1044. I love the look of Victory patterns but I'm in a no buy period in my life so I've had to admire from afar.
Yesterday I ate leftover haggis, roasted sweet potatoes mashed with butter, and small sweet peppers roasted in oil.

  34. I really like the neckline on Simplicity 1044.
For supper tomorrow we are having split peas soup. There is very little time after work before my beekeeping class, so I'll turn on the slow cooker when I leave in the morning and when I come home it's all ready. My recipe is largely based on this http://www.canadianliving.com/food/classic_pea_soup_with_ham.php with the addition of some thyme, tarragon, savory and a smoked pork hock instead of ham.

(I also make my own deodorant. I use this recipe http://howaboutorange.blogspot.ca/2010/04/how-to-make-your-own-deodorant.html )

  35. All of those patterns are divine but I think the Simplicity 3431 is the one for me!

    Now dinner...... Let me think.

My brain is very slow at recalling things like what I ate over the last few days hahaha Last night was pizza so that doesnt count, but what did we have the night before????? OK I really cant recall, thats sad!

So I will post you my favourite recipe instead! And it is my specialty!

    Beef Wellington
A hunk of top quality meat (eye fillet)
Brown in quickly in a pan with peppercorns
Remove from pan and cover with Chicken Pate (sounds yuck but OMG its lovely once its all cooked)
    Add chopped mushrooms
Wrap it all in puff pastry
Cook in the oven until its how you like your steak
    Cut and serve

    YUMMO!!!!!!!!!!

  36. Hi there, what a lovely giveaway. I would be interested in the McCall's 5517 and 3752 patterns. I'm also having a giveaway on my blog if you are interested.

Oh, dinner, you say. Well, I'm not much of a cook. I'm much rather sew, craft, garden or rearrange, organize decorate things. AND i hate doing the dishes, so that part always follows the dinner cooking part. I can tell you something that made me laugh (and, ok, I have had this for dinner on at least one occasion, shhh). The cartoon went something like this, it is a picture of a woman sitting at a table and she is telling what she had for dinner. She says "I had grapes, grapes for dinner. Well, the juice of the grapes, mostly. Well, the juice was more fermented than juice. Sort of like a fermented grape liquid.....Wine. I had wine for dinner." :)

  39. Fabulous giveaway! I'm interested in McCall's 5517 (1960).

I love to cook (and eat :D). Yesterday I had my lovely in law's over for dinner. I made non-grilled chicken tikka masala, vegetable madras and rice with nuts and raisins. The curries were yogurt-based and I used full fat greek yogurt to give them a wonderful creaminess. Oh, and I made them in the slowcooker, my favourite kitchen appliance! It turned out really well. My father in law even said 3 times during dinner "this is so good." Good sign, right?

    ReplyDelete
  40. Hmmm....so many yummy patterns...but I like Simplicity 1044 : ) As for food one of my favorites is to pull out whatever veggies are in the fridge, throw together a green curry sauce and simmer until warm. Then I get to eat all I want over rice or quinoa.

  41. I love the Simplicity 3431 pattern. I have homemade pasta yesterday night. Thank you for the wonderful giveaway! Cheers!!

  42. I just love Simplicity 3431! As far as dinner goes, I have been in roasted veggie mode for a while. Add a bit of quinoa and dinner is served!

  43. I would love to be in the draw for McCalls 3752 please.

This week was pretty warm in Sydney so one night I just made a Caprese-style salad: I toasted lots of pine nuts in olive oil, then poured them over equal quantities of vine ripened roma tomatoes (cut into chunks) and bocconcini cheese. For a dressing I just mixed balsamic vinegar with a few spoonfuls of basil pesto and a dash more olive oil. Very simple food but I love eating it! Oh and I made a coconut pound cake for dessert (and snacks).

    ReplyDelete
  44. Simplicity 1044 would be my choice for the lovely collar detail. This week I made roast chicken with lemon and thyme courtesy of Smitten Kitchen's wonderful cookbook. Everything I attempt from her book turns out tasty despite any little mistakes. She's reversing my 50% cooking fail rate yay!! I made her blueberry cornmeal butter cake too and it's all gone ;)

    ReplyDelete
  45. McCalls 3752 for me. I've already got the Nicola Victory pattern, so would love another if I ever won!
As for cooking, very little this week, it's been warm weather, so we've mainly been eating salads, but I did have a mushroom and chive omelette the other night. Not amazing cooking I'm afraid!

    ReplyDelete
  46. Simplicity 3431 please! Thank you so much!
I made a roast with a tamarind glaze with soy sauce and garlic, grilled mini potatoes (skin on) with whole garlic cloves and tons of paprika, corn soup with egg drops and cherry tomato salad with dried edamame and sugared walnats in a balsamic vinegar sauce. (this was friday night dinner and as I am a jew we tend to over do ourselves on fridays!)

  47. I love the Simplicity 1044! Last Sunday, I made a big batch of asian dumplings from the King Arthur Flour recipe. They're now in my freezer, and I pulled some out for a quick dinner more than once this week!

    ReplyDelete
  48. Love the Simplicity 1044 pattern, in the last week I made a lovely orange sponge cake with a glaze, gluten free, on allrecipes.co.uk not really dinner, but the best thing I ate all week

    ReplyDelete
  49. Simplicity 3431! I made sweet potato tater tots the other night for dinner. I got them in the freezer section so there's not a lot to say about the prep work. But they were really delicious!

    ReplyDelete
  50. I made fresh tomato sauce with lots caramelized onions as a base and plenty of fresh basil from the garden.

I like the McCalls 3752 vintage pattern - nice peter pan collar.

    ReplyDelete
  51. I'm in college, so I get most of my food from the cafeteria. I did discover a new guilty breakfast, however. A toasted bagel with peanut butter and chocolate chips! So good.

I like the Madeline Pattern the best, and I would love to sew up McCalls 3752 and Simplicity 3431.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Phew, made it! I love the McCalls 3752 pattern. :) And the only meal I cooked this week was a rather odd turkey casserole. I bought some free range turkey drumsticks and put them in the ovenproof casserole with tomatoes, chopped chorizo, lentils and herbs. Cooked it for a couple of hours then threw in a handful of rice. 30 minutes later we had an amazing spicy pilaf with turkey. It tasted even better cold the next day. :)

    ReplyDelete
  53. I'm having trouble deciding between the two Simplicity patterns; both are right up my alley. I made a lovely meatloaf for dinner Friday. It was a Cook's Illustrated recipe with some minced mushrooms in it that really lightened up the texture.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Not sure if I'm in time for entry if so I would love the Victory pattern. I made spinach and ricotta cannelloni a recipe from my Italian fiend! so a winner

    ReplyDelete
  55. I love Simplicity 3431!! I can totaly see myself in this dress!! Last week for dinner we had gołąbki, which is cbbage leaf stuffed with meat and rice (and onion, salt pepper etc). You pour tomato sauce on it and eat with mashed potatoes. It is soooo good, but takes a lot of work to prepare, so it's usually a family effort!
